Creating an immersive stroll and show that takes visitors back to the abbey of the Middle Ages is an exciting challenge. Several physical constraints had to be contended with: the building had to be carefully preserved, conditions were very cramped in certain areas, the installations had to be discreet and, perhaps the most complex point – it was crucial for the show to offer the same quality by day as at dusk and at night.

On top of these constraints came the objectives that were essential to the success of the event, which needed to be for the general public, international, accessible to even the youngest visitors, and draw on the actual history of the abbey. With this in mind, the formula we put in place was based on an artistic direction taking the form of cultural mediation conveyed via emotions, first and foremost.
In order to engage all the senses and really delve into the story, we used as our main vector a portable audio system. When individually triggered, this made for a simultaneously personal and collective experience. At certain points along the route, this close-up sound is supplemented by ambient sound systems that give a fuller, more spatial sound.
Similarly, two complementary approaches were applied to the visual register: physical and virtual. "Anamorphic installations" were installed in certain rooms to help everyone, especially children, to anchor the audio narrative in reality.
In the darkest corners or at dusk, light and projections elevated the setting and further illustrated the story recounted. Finally, a number of special effects were woven into the tapestry of techniques deployed to make visitors’ overall experience as immersive as possible.
